Feedback on Mt Hobson Middle School:

From current families

"I just wanted to say thank you so much for looking after [name removed] so well. I can see he has grown a lot and been learning to be more mature and independent. What I like about Mt Hobson Middle School is it gives children a chance to grow as a person. My son gets on with anybody once he knows them. He is very timid basically, but his social skills have been practised with other boys at school as it is easy to interact in such a small and warm environment. He had his very first PSAT test as [the equivalent of] a Sixth Grader three weeks ago. The required scores were 410 for verbal/reading and 430 for maths (for a 7 grader) to renew his membership at a Talented Center of Johns Hopkins University. He has surpassed these scores and even attained the award ceremony eligibility of 550."

"We are very grateful that [name removed] is able to attend Mt Hobson Middle School. We couldn’t ask for a better environment for her to be in. She is very happy and settled and is enjoying her time there."

"What you have at your school is extremely special and should be preserved at all costs. To provide a school environment that achieves educational goals, but most of all is done so in a nurturing environment, gives teenagers the confidence to try new things and overcome fears that most of my generation were taught to conceal in clever ways, but to our overall collective detriment. It is simplistic to tell children to be more risk adverse, but to provide them with the platform to do so allows this to happen of its own accord. So keep up the good work, and keep encouraging and praising, for those are the things that the kids will remember about your school when they are my age."

"MHMS class size is great. Children cannot ‘hide’ or ‘slip through the cracks’. We like the work ethic being encouraged. Wholesome activities. Good culture. The small school size means that all children know each other, making it a more comfortable and less intimidating environment for the children."

"You have all done such a good job in setting high expectations for behaviour and reinforcing the importance of respect, whilst allowing them the freedom to have some fun. I can’t thank you enough for playing a huge part in helping my son to grow from an impulsive kid who was disillusioned with the value of school into a lovely young man who actually enjoys learning and has increased his personal confidence level enormously."

"We have been delighted with the progress that ***** has made while he has been at Mt Hobson. He has become an independent learner, his social skills with his peers have improved and he seems more able to tackle subjects that he finds difficult. Mt Hobson has really done marvellous things for him."

"Because of the small size of the school the students are well known by the teachers and cared for. We are confident that you and the teachers know what is going on in the playground. This along with zero tolerance to bullying and swearing provides the students with a safe environment. It’s great to have a happy child at the end of the day."

Transition to high school

"It was clear to both ***** and I that the time he had spent at Mt Hobson had had a huge impact on him and while this was not obvious in much of his uncompleted project work while with you, he has certainly learned the skills and is now reaping the rewards. NCEA is definitely suiting him; he is doing really well and came home on Friday with the news that he got an Excellent in his first History assessment (he was so happy about this) and a Merit in Maths."

"Just thought you would like to hear this, as it is not down to us, but the approach to learning he developed at Mt Hobson. He came to you troubled by his inability to show the education world what he knew and though your approach to learning has come away with a lot of skills and an approach to learning that will I am sure, lead to success. It was not always easy to see that this would be the result and it did take a full 4 years but many people have said to ***** and I that we clearly did the right thing in sending him to Mt Hobson and they were right."

Success at university

“We don’t believe that our son would have got his degree without the pivotal Year 9 & 10 he had at Mt Hobson Middle School. He learned, not only content and skills, but also about himself. He has gone on to do something we were not convinced was possible."

"Matthew has always seen the world in a different way to his brothers. Strongly intuitive at cards and strategic games and empathetic to those around him, he found writing and spelling a real challenge.

"The two years he spent in Mt Hobson Middle School in Years 9 and 10 were formative for him. They helped him develop mastery over project work which involved organisation and independent research. He developed friends and found the small class size conducive to learning. One of the characteristics that have marked Matthew in his teens has been his determination to complete tasks even when he found them difficult. This has been a great asset to him allowing him to complete a three-year degree, Bachelor in Human Services majoring in Disability Studies. He was keen to pursue this course, in part, from the time he spent with children with cerebral palsy at Carlson School for Cerebral Palsy in Three Kings which was part of the community service component at Mt Hobson Middle School. We are proud of our son, for who he is and his achievements and grateful for the encouragement and help Mt Hobson Middle School gave him."

From the community

We enjoy a positive relationship with Mt Hobson Middle School students who have visited us regularly over a number of years now. They have impressed us with the way they have responded to the challenge of meeting our students and staff and learned to communicate and co-operate effectively in the very ‘special ‘ environment of Carlson School for Cerebral Palsy. We value opportunities for Carlson students to form relationships with mainstream peers. (Murray Herd, Carlson School for Cerebral Palsy)

A great big thank you to your incredible students for raising the amazing amount of $4500 for The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ. We hope you had fun and that you learnt a bit more about our Kiwi hero, Fred Hollows, and the sight-restoring work his Foundation continues to do. Because of your hard work, many people who once lived in darkness will be able to see their families again. Thank You! (Taleen Khalili, Fundraising & Marketing Manager, The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ)
